FAQ
How are we different?

Bow Valley Power has been providing Albertans with energy retail services since 2010. Over the last decade we have gotten to know people from all walks of life living all across our beautiful province. It is these people and the customers we serve that have shaped who we are and what we stand for. Through listening to our customers we have created a business that offers competitive pricing solutions to any individual or company’s energy retail needs. We have created a no contract low pressure approach to our energy plans so that customers have the freedom to change rates or cancel services without paying any exit fees. In partnership with Green Alberta Energy we created the Solar Club where customers with solar installations can earn more for the energy they sell back to the grid. We have created an application where customers can choose, if any, the percentage of their electricity consumption they would like to offset with green energy.

These changes and improvements to our business were driven by you, by Albertans, and we thank you for that. As we move into the next decade our business will undoubtedly go through more changes and need to evolve with the ever changing markets we are emerged in. No matter the changes and evolutions we need to make, our one guiding principle will never change, support local, stay local. Bow Valley Power – “Albertans Serving Alberta”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bow Valley Power offers electricity service to all customers in Alberta, except those serviced by an independent (operated) REA. We also provide natural gas services to customers who have delivery of their gas from ATCO Gas or AltaGas.

Below are the common terms in Bow Valley Power’s monthly power bill.

a) Meter Read:
Each month the Wires Distribution Company (ATCO, ENMAX, EPCOR, FortisAlberta, Lethbridge) will read your meter and prepare a file called a Tariff Bill File (TBF). This electronic file is sent to the retailer. It contains the current meter read and the date the meter was read. The difference between the current read and the previous read is your actual consumption during the defined time period. The actual consumption is used to calculate the cost and price of your energy use.

b) Distribution Fees:
These fees are regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The current charges invoiced by the Wires Distribution Company that services your site is billed monthly, with direct pass through of distribution fees. No additional charges or mark-up is applied to these charges.

c) Administration (Admin) Fees:
This covers the basic transactional fees incurred by Bow Valley Power in processing your invoice. Please refer to Electricity Rates for current rates.

d) Wholesale Cost:
This is the actual cost for the electricity you consumed. To calculate the Wholesale Cost, we use the hourly Pool Price (PP) averaged over the calendar month. We then adjust this cost based on your consumption relative to your Profile Class. This Profile Class is determined by your Wires Distribution Company. The Wholesale Cost includes the Line Loss (LL), Unaccounted For Energy (UFE), Retail Market Adjustments (RAM) plus the Alberta Electric System Operator’s Spot Trading Charge (STC).

e) Energy Price:
The energy price is adjusted monthly. It is based on the average Wholesale Cost of electricity consumed plus Retailer Markup (profit margin for Bow Valley Power). This price is applied to the energy you use, based on the meter read.

f) Common Terms:
The following terms are often used in the electricity industry – Line Losses (LL), Pool Prices (PP), Spot Trading Charge (STC) and Unaccounted For Energy (UFE).
LL The information to calculate the LL is obtained from the WCI transaction (as referenced within under the Systems Settlement Code as administered by the AUC). For customers in all other distribution zones the line loss factor is provided by the distribution company and referenced as a percentage.
PP Refers to the hourly Power Pool price as published by the Alberta Electric System Operator. The hourly price can be monitored using the Price Alert system published on the Spot Power web site.
STC Means the Spot Trading Charge as published by the Alberta Electric Systems Operator.
UFE Means the unaccounted for energy. The UFE factor is obtained from the SSI transaction as provided by the Load Settlement Agent (LSA). The LSA is the operating division within each Distribution Company.
If you have any other questions regarding your power bill please let us know!

Please call your Wires Distribution Company (ATCO, ENMAX, EPCOR, FortisAlberta, Lethbridge).

Bow Valley Power offers some of the most competitive electricity prices in Alberta. We offer both floating electricity rates and fixed electricity rates. The floating electricity rate changes each month. While our fixed rate offerings stay the same for the length of the term. For our current list of prices, please refer to our Electricity Rates page.

In Alberta, you can choose how you buy electricity. You can sign a contract with an Energy Retailer at an agreed contract price and terms. You also can buy your electricity at a regulated rate, called the RRO. The regulated rate is the unit price of electricity (cents per kilowatt hour – kWh) that is provided to customers who do not select a competitive retailer (which is why the RRO is also known as the default rate). This rate changes each month.
Bow Valley Power offers both floating and fixed rates (the RRO only offers floating rates). Our fixed rates average less than the RRO.

Electricity exported to the grid by Small Micro Generation (MG) units , as defined under the provisions of the Province of Alberta, Electric Utilities Act, Micro-Generation Regulation, is calculated based on meter read information provided by your respective wires company. The export electricity metered data is processed on a monthly basis and will be included as a ‘MG Credit’ on your invoice. The micro generation credit amount is the same rate as the rate you are paying for your electricity.

No. Services provided by competitive retailers differ only by price and other contract features and the electricity will continue to come to your home or small business through the same wires, no matter who you choose as an electricity retailer. By law, the local utility company is not allowed to provide different care levels to customers who have chosen an alternate supplier. You will continue to receive the same level of delivery quality, emergency response, and meter reading from your current local utility. If, for some reason, a competitive retailer decided to abruptly end its services, that company’s customers would automatically be switched over to the regulated rate provider, without any service disruptions.

With Bow Valley Power interest accounts, you are required to put down a prudential security payment. This is $200 for residential accounts and $500 for business accounts (or two months of invoicing, whichever is greater). We pay 5% interest on this deposit on a monthly basis as a credit against your bill.

Utilities Consumer Advocate

The Office of the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) was created in October 2003 to represent the interests of electricity and natural gas consumers (residential, small business, farm) in Alberta. The UCA team works to ensure consumers have the information, representation and protection they need to help them make informed choices in Alberta’s deregulated electricity and natural gas markets.

Bow Valley Power is recognized by the Government of Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate as both an energy marketer and a green power provider in the province of Alberta.

To contact the UCA Helps, call 310-4822 or click here to visit their website.

Bow Valley Power not only offers competitive rates on standard power, but also provides green power throughout the province. With customers in over 180 Albertan communities we are committed to
providing affordable, sustainable power throughout Alberta.
